How to Evaluate Linebackers Using Hudl IQ

3 min Read

Hudl IQ helps coaches evaluate linebackers with advanced stats on blitz percentage, true tackle percentage and solo tackle success rate.

Linebackers are the enforcers. They can stuff the run, drop into coverage, blitz off the edge and dictate the alignment of the entire defense. But great linebacker play is about more than just toughness and instincts. It demands elite read-and-react abilities, pursuit angles and communication across all levels of the defense, all of which have been historically difficult to quantify and measure.

With the Hudl IQ linebacker tools, coaches can go beyond the eye test to get a comprehensive evaluation of linebackers using advanced video and data. Whether you’re scouting opponents or evaluating players on your own depth chart, Hudl IQ brings clarity to one of the game’s most important positions.

Here’s a quick look at Hudl IQ’s linebacker tools and how coaches are getting the most out of them.

Player Radar. Hudl IQ radars use specific stats and metrics to provide a comprehensive overview of player traits and performance—all of which can be compared to national averages.

Use the Trait Radar to see how linebackers are schematically utilized, with Blitz %, On Ball %, Depth of Target and more.

The Performance Radar provides a clearer picture of on-field performance. See key metrics like True Tackle %, Solo Tackle Success Rate, Havoc %, Stuff % and more.

Havoc Map. Use the Havoc Map visualization to measure the percentage of plays where a linebacker creates a disruptive event, like a tackle for loss, sack, or forced fumble, along with where they’re lining up during those events. Think of this as a visual tool for seeing how disruptive a linebacker is throughout the season.

Plus, every Havoc Event is tied to video, with each video clip featuring a speed overlay to display the player’s speed throughout the duration of a given play.

Snap Distribution. Use the Snap Distribution tab to see how a linebacker is lining up depending on where the ball is on the field –  critical information for properly evaluating where and how a player is being used in the grand scheme of a defense.

Player Comparison. The Hudl IQ Player Comparison tool helps coaches evaluate two or more athletes side-by-side using advanced metrics, player radars, visual charts and tagged film. Use familiar player scores or self-select a list of players to compare that are statistically alike. This tool can be used to game plan against similar players or as a transfer portal tool to target statistically comparable players.

Hudl IQ defensive radars. Pursuit analysis and coverage insights give coaches a new way to evaluate linebackers—highlighting who’s diagnosing plays fastest, filling gaps with discipline and making big plays across the field.

Player Information. Scout linebackers to see precisely how they line up throughout the season. The Player Information section breakdown alignments and includes details on height, weight, class, hometown, high school, recruiting class, Recruiting 247 ranking, Recruiting composite ranking and colleges offered.

Hudl IQ’s defensive radars, pursuit tracking and coverage insights give coaches a powerful new way to evaluate linebackers—identifying who’s reading plays, attacking gaps and making game-changing stops on a consistent basis.
