How Pennsylvania Legion Baseball Leveled Up Their State Tournament Experience

4 min Read

PA Legion Baseball reached more than 5,000 fans by livestreaming with Hudl.

Pennsylvania State Activities Director Lewis Jones knew something had to change.

Jones, a former baseball coach of 20 years, spends his summers managing the Pennsylvania State Legion Baseball Tournament. Each year, teams across the state compete to be one of the eight teams at both the junior and senior levels to make it to the prestigious state-wide competition.

Since taking over his post almost four years ago, he’s tried a bit of everything to level up the tournament experience for players and fans alike.

At first, he had no way to livestream games. So he turned to local sports networks to stream games via the internet. Unsatisfied with the end product and technical capabilities, he turned to another streaming service, but quickly realized that it had its limitations too. He knew there had to be something better out there. That’s when he found Hudl.

“We immediately saw the value of it (Hudl) because not only can we do streaming, but it provided other benefits for us too,” Jones explained. “…I wanted to be able to show the scores of the games. I wanted to show multiple fields of view and multiple camera angles. And the fact that you can do it all yourself made a big difference.”

Giving Fans Across the State a Front-Row Seat

The first time Pennsylvania Legion Baseball decided to stream through Hudl, they used Jones’s iPhone, which was positioned behind the home plate backstop, and streamed through their own personalized Hudl Fan page. Despite not having a dedicated camera yet, he immediately noticed that it was an upgrade over the old way of doing things.

“It actually worked beautifully because we were able to get a very good, crisp, professional-looking picture,” Jones said. “The fans loved it because they could easily see the action on the field. And it was great for us because we had people watching at over 600 American Legion posts throughout the state, plus families from around the state. At one point, we had over 5,000 unique views, so that made me really happy.”

Jones said that the Hudl Fan page was particularly helpful and easy to use. To encourage viewership, he created fliers with the Hudl Fan page link included and sent them to outposts throughout the state, making it easy for parents, family and friends to find the livestream they wanted.

“The Fan page is very simple to set up. It’s one-stop shopping, really,” he said. “It made life so simple.”

One of Jones’ favorite parts of the Hudl Fan page was that it made it easy to share livestream links with anyone interested in tuning in, enabling far-away family members and friends to see their favorite players and teams at the click of a button.

“A lot of these kids, their families can’t travel to games,” he explained. “So having that Fan page and (being able to watch from anywhere) is a huge bonus.”

Beyond the Broadcasts

The Pennsylvania State Legion Baseball organization has loved having Hudl as a broadcast partner for their annual state tournament. But soon after using the livestream platform, they quickly realized that the benefits of Hudl extend far beyond just filming and streaming games.

“I see them using Hudl as a learning tool,” Jones said. “...We’ve talked to them (coaches) about how they can use Hudl to record batting practice, infield practice, use (Hudl Assist) data to break down their performance and use it to help players improve their skill sets.”

Jones is quick to admit that he’s excited about the possibilities with teams using Hudl Assist in the short and long term.

“One of the big things for me is that teams will be able to submit their videos, upload them and have them broken down,” he said. “And then those players can put together their portfolio or highlight reels and send them to colleges.”

Jones says he’s hoping to encourage other members of the state organization to sign up and reap the benefits that Hudl has to offer.

“If you’re looking for a one-stop solution that does everything, use Hudl,” Jones said. “...Because Hudl provides all of these capabilities that you really can’t get with most other programs.”
