Record Hockey Games with Hudl Focus Flex

Hockey is a fast-paced sport and has pushed coaching staff to streamline their workflows, in order to create more efficient and effective evaluations of players’ performances and development. When thinking about your own process and analysis workflow, one of the first things to assess is how you capture and share your team’s performances on the ice.

Traditional hockey video cameras and iPads are adequate for recording games and practices but often don’t include the best camera settings for hockey. That means because you need dedicated, reliable resources, these traditional cameras can fall short in streamlining coaching workflows or providing consistent, high-quality video.

That’s where Hudl Focus Flex comes in. Simply put: Focus Flex is the best camera for hockey. It’s a professional-grade ice hockey camera that not only handles the recording of your hockey games and practices but also the uploading and sharing of footage—all automatically.

Plus, if you play an away game, Focus Flex goes where you go. The Focus Flex portable hockey camera delivers a whole new angle for hockey teams and allows for effortless recording, instant uploads and no-hassle livestreaming. All of these elements make it an excellent option as part of your hockey solution.

How to Record Hockey Games

Check out these recording requirements and tips to make sure you get the best video for your team and for Hudl Assist.

Use the Correct Equipment

  • Make sure to use the correct equipment like the Focus Flex camera, high-definition (HD) camera or iPad for reliable recording and high-quality video.
  • If you decide to utilize a tripod for filming, be sure to have a smooth stream. It’s hard to tag and watch a shaky video stream.

How to Record

  • Film your game in high-definition when possible.
  • Follow the puck during all of the action.
  • Keep things in focus.
  • Record with audio if at all possible.
  • If using an iPad, record in landscape mode.

The Best Method For Recording

  • Film the entire rink but avoid zooming.
  • Record the scoreboard often and always at the end of every period.
  • Record the referee signals when possible.
  • Ensure that jersey numbers are visible.

Where You Should Record

  • Set up your Focus Flex camera or iPad at center ice, approximately 10 rows up.
  • Do your best to limit obstructions to the camera like fans, equipment, etc.

Why Your Game Could Get Rejected by Assist

  • If you submit a scrimmage or game that doesn’t follow the normal rules.
  • If your video is out of order.
  • If the game is filmed from a bad angle.
  • If there are obstructions in front of the camera.
  • If there are multiple games included in one event.
