Georgia Tech’s McIntyre Webb built a Hudl-powered scouting system so intuitive that anyone can use it. Here’s how — and why it works.
When McIntyre Webb arrived at Georgia Tech Women's Basketball, he didn't start over. He didn't have to.
Webb came from Indiana as one of the most advanced Hudl users in the country — and the systems he'd spent years building were designed to travel.
"I have tried to build things that are kind of ubiquitous and able to be implemented wherever I am," he said. "I wouldn't say I ever left anything behind."
That portability wasn't accidental. It was a philosophy born out of necessity — and one that's quietly shaped how Webb thinks about every workflow, every code window, and every tool he builds.
Build for Yourself, Then for Everyone
Early in his career, Webb did everything himself. No team of managers, no one to offload to. That constraint became a design principle.
"If my workflows are dependent on four or five other people, that means every year I’m dependent on finding those extra hands, and I’m in trouble if I don’t get them," he explained. “Everything essential has to be done off my desk and get to the assistants and the head coach that way — just out of necessity, almost—but then I get to be creative in how I use any extra help that I have."
That creativity is how his accessible workflows are built. Webb builds his systems so that anyone who walks into his office — a first-year manager, a coach who's never touched Hudl Sportscode — can get oriented quickly using customized workflows to accomplish projects that capitalize on their strengths.
"I don't want anybody who's interested in video to come to me and say, 'I would like to do it, but that stuff is intimidating,'” he said. “That's how I got my start — somebody building a workflow I was able to understand and work with. I want to be able to do that for managers and coaches these days."
Instat as a Floor Raiser
Before Hudl Instat, scouting meant a blank timeline and hours of manual coding before you could answer a single question. Webb describes the shift simply.
"The big thing Instat did for me was allow me to go deeper. Pre-Instat, you'd get film, put it into Sportscode, and it's a blank timeline. Now I download a game and in five minutes I've got a complete timeline with all sorts of data already in it. That just takes my starting point and elevates it to an extremely high level."
He still does significant work on top of what Instat provides — that's the point. The hours that used to go toward building a baseline now go toward the questions that actually matter.
"The work I used to put in to go from zero to bare minimum, I can now spend going from a really good starting point to deep analysis,” he said. “By the time the finished product gets to our head coach or our assistants, they're having data at their fingertips they aren't used to having — and they can make better decisions."
Replay: The Right Tool for the Right Moment
Webb uses Hudl Replay as a game day solution, with live streaming in practice keeping things simpler on the floor. On the bench, the value is in the specificity — being able to pull up exactly the right clip at exactly the right moment, already tagged, already queued.
That specificity showed up clearly in a game against Stanford. Webb was on the bench as an assistant, not behind a live-coding setup. Stanford ran a few plays that hurt the Yellow Jackets, and during a timeout, Webb pulled up Replay on his iPad.
"I pulled up the exact clip, paused it, and coached them through that situation. It was so much better than trying to diagram something or walk them through the theory of it. It was just: this is what's happening. You see where you're standing on the court? When that happens, do this."
It worked because the clip was there — immediately, correctly labeled, ready to hand to a player. No searching, no scrolling, no time lost.
Everything Talking to Everything
The deeper value of running on a single platform, Webb says, is what happens when the tools connect - when the data from Instat flows into Sportscode, and Sportscode flows into Replay, and you can answer questions that simply don't get answered when you're stitching things together from outside your ecosystem.
"When you go outside your ecosystem, there's a transfer of data that doesn't take place. I'm getting the same video of the same play, but I'm not getting the same thing. Having quick access to detailed data — it was a ball screen, we covered it with this coverage, the play result was a missed pull-up — only happens because everything plays well together."
That depth isn't just useful in games. It's what makes scouting deeper, what lets him compile player data across multiple past seasons in minutes, what gives his coaching staff answers they didn't know they could have.
What You Can Do Right Now
For staffers just starting to build their video and analytics operation, Webb's advice is less about tools and more about mindset.
"You always have to be willing to learn. That gets you further than anything technical. Keep your eyes open for things other people do better or differently, and why they do those things."
He still keeps his earliest code windows around, not out of nostalgia, but to show people what iteration actually looks like.
"Ten years ago when I was starting, it didn't look like this. You start with the best you can do right now and make it better when you know better. You can't get intimidated looking at the end product."
His other piece of advice: events like Hudl's Elite User Summits were foundational.
"I didn't know output windows were a thing until I went to a user conference and learned that all the data I'd been collecting was actually useful. If somebody hadn't taught me then, I wouldn't be here today."
The house Webb has built — at Georgia Tech, at Indiana, and everywhere prior — started, as he puts it, with cardboard. The insulation came later. So did the shingles.
But the foundation was always the same: build something you understand, build it so others can too, and keep building until it's exactly what you need.
