How to Win in Tournament Football: Key Insights from our Women’s Euros Panel

3 min Read

Catch up on the highlights and big takeaways from our Women’s Euros panel discussion and live watch-along.

With the 2025 UEFA Women’s Euros in full swing, Hudl took the opportunity to bring together leading professionals from the women's global football community to explore what it takes to win in tournament football and how data can give you the edge.

Hosted in London's Soho, our ‘How to Win the Women’s Euros’ event, featured an expert-led panel discussion – diving into what it takes to go deep in knock-out competitions – followed by a live watch-along of England’s crunch group stage match with the Netherlands.

Individuals from top clubs, agencies and media outlets packed in to hear former Lioness Izzy Christiansen, renowned journalist and broadcaster Flo Lloyd-Hughes, and Hudl Statsbomb Specialist Martha Reyna explore how data, video, and lived experience all shape performance at the highest level of the women’s game.

Whether you missed the event or want to delve further, here are the key takeaways on how Hudl solutions, including Hudl Statsbomb and Hudl Wyscout, are used to sharpen their strategy in the most high-stakes moments.

What it Takes to Win

The pre-match panel kicked off discussing the drivers that create a winning environment in tournament football.

Christiansen highlighted the importance of role clarity within the squad and the communication of clear, concise messaging in order to execute game plans – both areas which can be enhanced by  effective use of data.

Tournament football brings its own set of unique challenges, such as dealing with quick turnarounds, the pressure of expectation, and the spotlight of media narratives. But Christiansen explained that top players will see that as an opportunity:

“For a lot of players it’s a new pressure, but it’s a welcome pressure. Players want it, so they can prove they can perform on the highest level. The increased public expectation also just shows how much the women’s game has grown in recent years.”

Half-time Analysis: Statsbomb in Action

As England raced into a two-goal lead courtesy of long range strikes from Lauren James and Georgia Stanway, the audience were treated to a fantastic half-time demonstration of the power of Hudl Statsbomb.

Reyna’s analysis highlighted the significant improvement in England’s shooting positions with Statsbomb’s breathtaking visualisations, wowing the crowd with 3D Freeze Frames.

The demo also showed the quality and depth of data on offer, as well as Statsbomb’s industry-leading and gender-aware xG model — all available free of charge to women’s teams across 14 leagues for the sixth consecutive year running.

Finding the Edge with Data and Video

Another main topic from the panel discussion revolved around how data can be used to enhance and optimise opposition analysis when prep time is minimal and margins for error are slim.

“In a tournament setting, time is tight and the stakes are high. Data helps teams find patterns quickly — what’s working, what’s not, and how opponents behave under pressure,” she explained.

Hudl Statsbomb’s event data gives coaches tactical detail, while Hudl Wyscout video helps them verify what the stats are showing, ultimately allowing for better decisions to be made faster.”

Lloyd-Hughes also pointed to the fact that, while a wealth of video and data can help you develop strategies to nullify star players, there is a window of opportunity for breakout youngsters – such as Michelle Agyemang or Vicky López – to make an impact, given the smaller sample size of information available to analyse.

After the Lionesses capped off an impressive 4-0 victory over the Netherlands, attendees stayed on for drinks, food, and informal networking, sharing their thoughts on the future of women’s football and the role of data and video in driving it forward.

From tactical edge to long-term development, one thing was clear: when used well, data doesn’t just explain the game — it helps you win it.

"It was so great to chat with Martha and Izzy and showcase some of Hudl and Statsbomb’s products. Insight and data are so important for a journalist, especially during a major tournament where you need to stay on top of so many different players and nations." Flo Lloyd-Hughes
