Titan Essentials: Introduction to Soccer Athlete Tracking

4 min Read

GPS tracking used to belong to elite soccer. It was the kind of technology that required a dedicated sports scientist, a sizeable budget, and a team of analysts just to make sense of the data. For most clubs, it was out of reach – and if it was in reach, it was hard to know where to start.

That's changed. And Titan Essentials is here to show you how.

This new series, hosted by Hudl Solutions Consultant Felicia Medalla-Kennedy, is designed for coaches and staff who want to get more from their athletes — but who traditionally haven’t had the time or resources to do so.

Whether you're managing a squad largely on your own or working across multiple responsibilities, we'll show you how to use Titan – Hudl’s accessible, professional-grade athlete tracking solution – right from pre-season to the end of the campaign.

Every episode follows the natural rhythm of the soccer season, so you can apply what you learn straight away – wherever you are in the sporting calendar.

In this first video, Felicia introduces the series, discusses the key principles, and walks through the core framework of everything we’ll cover.

The Three Pillars: Volume, Intensity and Density

Everything in this series comes back to three words. Think of them as the language of load management.

Volume is the ‘how much’ – the total work done over a session or a week. Total distance covered, for example. If you think of a car, volume is the odometer: how many miles you put on the engine today.

Intensity is the ‘how hard’ – not just how far players ran, but how fast and how explosively. A long, steady jog and a series of short, maximal sprints might cover similar distances. Intensity shows you the difference. It's the speedometer.

Density is the ‘how concentrated’ – how much work is packed into a given window of time. This becomes especially important when fixtures start piling up and recovery time shrinks.

Together, these three pillars let you move beyond guesswork. Instead of asking "did they work hard today?", you can ask the right questions – and get real answers.

You already have the data. Now we're going to show you how to use it — so you can see who's ready to go, who might need a lighter session, and how to keep your squad fit and sharp from the first session to the last match of the year. Felicia Medalla-Kennedy - Customer Solutions Consultant, Hudl

Who Is Titan Essentials For?

This series is aimed squarely at coaches and support staff who are time-poor and resource-limited – but serious about improving their athletes.

You might be a head coach who also handles conditioning. You might be managing rosters across multiple teams or sports. You might be new to GPS tracker technology entirely, or someone who has access to the data but isn't yet sure how to act on it.

Whatever your situation, Titan Essentials meets you where you are. We're not here to overwhelm you with metrics. We're here to help you build a practical workflow that fits your programme — phase by phase, season by season.

How the Series Works

Titan Essentials is structured around the four phases of the soccer season. Each phase reflects the periodisation that is at the heart of performance coaches’ work. We’ll look at the ‘why’ behind them and how data and wearable technology can support the burning issues that coaches face at different points in a typical campaign.

Pre-Season: Exposure. Volume is at its highest as we build the physical foundation. The focus is on gradually exposing players to the demands of competition – and using data to do it with precision rather than guesswork.

Early Competition: Maintenance. Volume and intensity start to meet in the middle. The goal is to hold on to the fitness base you've built while keeping the focus on soccer – and making sure your sessions are genuinely preparing players for what a real match demands.

Late Season: Perform. The fixture schedule is at its most intense. Volume is low, intensity is high, and every decision counts – from managing your starters' recovery to making sure your squad players stay sharp enough to contribute when called upon.

Post-Season: Evaluation. The season is over, but the work isn't. This is the phase for cleaning your data, reviewing the year, and using your performance benchmarks to inform recovery planning and recruitment ahead of the next cycle.

Each episode is built to be immediately practical. By the end of it, you'll have clear steps you can take back into your own programme straight away.

If you’re interested in learning more about monitoring periodisation, stay tuned for our next episode, where we’ll be diving into the topic in more detail.
