Shaka Smart

Inspired athletes through uplifting motivational tactics.

Who: Shaka Smart, head coach for the University of Texas and USA Basketball U18 men’s basketball teams

The Story: Coach Smart may be best known for the preferred style of play he affectionately calls “Havoc”, but it’s his methodical approach to motivation that sets him apart from most coaches.

One of Smart’s secrets to building winning programs is assigning one of his core values – appreciation, enthusiasm, competitiveness, teamship and accountability – to each day of the practice week.

Smart also updates a book of quotations (already over 100 pages long) and shares them with players via text on a daily basis.

Although Smart’s style of play can be intense, he makes sure everyone in his program focuses on the positives by repeating the phrase “Attack the day” throughout the season.

I would rather us be really simple and do the things that we do well than be complicated and not be very good at anything.” – Shaka Smart
