Download and Update Blackmagic Drivers

Blackmagic Drivers are required in order for Production Truck to utilize Blackmagic Drivers, such as the Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder. Download these drivers from within Production Truck or from the Blackmagic website.

Downloading Blackmagic Drivers from Production Truck

  1. Blackmagic Drivers can be directly downloaded from within Production Truck. Navigate up to the toolbar at the top of your Mac and navigate to Help. Select Download Links>Blackmagic Drivers.

    The Blackmagic Drivers will start to download to your computer.

Downloading Blackmagic Drivers From the Blackmagic Website

  1. Go to www.BlackMagicDesign.com. Find the Support Page. The link is at the top of the page.

  2. On the Support Page, scroll to Latest Downloads on the left-hand side. You DO NOT need to select your device. Find the newest version of Desktop Video. Click the Operating System that your computer uses. (Windows or Mac)

  3. This will open a registration window. Rgister your device OR just click Download Only in the bottom left corner of the window. This will begin the download.

Installing Desktop Video Setup

  1. Once the download is complete, open it from the downloads folder to unzip the folder. This will open a file called "Blackmagic_Desktop_Video_xx.x.dmg", with the appropriate version number. Double click this file.

    A window will open up that will include the installer. It is a green icon titled "Install Desktop Video xx.x", double click this. This is the installation window. Follow the prompts to navigate through the standard install process. Input the password of the computer administrator.

    It is recommended running the uninstaller if you already have a version of Blackmagic Desktop Video installed on your computer.

  2. Restart your computer at the prompt. While the computer is restarting, plug your device in.

    Perform a firmware update for your device if prompted.

    Underr Mac System Preferences> Security & Privacy, you may need to allow the Desktop Video Setup in order for the installation/changes to take effect.

Blackmagic drivers are now up to date.

Double check in System Preferences>Blackmagic Desktop Video to make sure input format is correct.

Further Troubleshooting: If Production Truck detects the device(s) and they show up under the source drop-down but there is no video, check all video formats between the camera, Desktop Video Drivers, Production Truck. Also, check to make sure the camera is set to output the video through the correct channels (HDMI, SDI).

Installing Blackmagic Drivers on Apple M1 Chip

  1. Due to changes with the M1 chip, Blackmagic Drivers must be installed in a particular manner. Attempting to install the Blackmagic Drivers in the traditional manner will result in devices being unusable.

    Unsure if your computer contains an M1 chip? Check by navigating up to the Apple logo in the upper left and selecting About this Mac.

    Under the Chip area, look for the Apple M1 listed.

Please note that the following are a list of Blackmagic devices that are compatible with M1 chip that we see frequent use with our services and software Older Blackmagic models like the Mini Recorder or Mini Monitor, are no longer compatible.

Change MacOS Security Settings

  1. On the Mac with Apple silicon, choose Apple menu and choose Shut Down.

  2. Press and hold the power button until you see “Loading startup options”. Click Options, then click Continue.

  3. If requested, enter the password for an administrator account. The Mac opens in Recovery mode. In macOS Recovery, choose Utilities > Startup Security Utility at the top of the MacOS.

  4. Select the startup disk to use to set the security policy. If the disk is encrypted with FileVault, click Unlock, enter the password, then click Unlock.

    Click Security Policy.

    Reduced Security: Allows any version of signed operating system software ever trusted by Apple to run.

    If necessary, select Reduced Security, enter the administrator username and password, then do one of the following:

    • Select the “Allow user management of kernel extensions from identified developers” tickbox to allow installation of software that uses legacy kernel extensions.
    • Select the “Allow remote management of kernel extensions and automatic software updates” tickbox to authorize remote management of legacy kernel extensions and software updates using an MDM solution.
  5. Click OK.

    Restart your Mac for the changes to take effect.

Download Blackmagic Drivers

  1. Go to www.BlackMagicDesign.com and find to the Support Page. The link is at the top of the page.

  2. On the Support Page, scroll to Latest Downloads on the left-hand side. You DO NOT need to select your device. Find the newest version of Desktop Video (MUST be at least Desktop Video 12.0).

  3. This will open a registration window. Register your device OR just click Download Only in the bottom left corner of the window. This will begin the download.

  4. Once the download is complete open it from the downloads folder to unzip the folder. This will open a file called "Blackmagic_Desktop_Video_xx.x.dmg", with the appropriate version number. Double click this file.

  5. A window will open up that will include the installer. It is a green icon titled "Install Desktop Video xx.x", double click this. This is the installation window. Follow the prompts to navigate through the standard install process. You will be asked for the password of the computer administrator.

    It is recommended to run the uninstaller if you already have a version of Blackmagic Desktop Video installed on your computer.
