Video Introduction
The new iPhone App will allow you to follow along with the events on the field. As you tag the game, all of the data that has been inputted will be stored in Hudl. For now, the Tag a Game feature is available on the iPhone 3GS and newer, as well as the iPod 3rd generation and newer.
As you tag a game, the Hudl app will track ODK, Down, Distance, Gain/Loss, Yard Line, Hash, Play Type, Play Result, Score, and Quarter; and compile that data to be imported into your library later.
- Open your Hudl app and start by clicking on the Tag a Game option at the bottom of the main screen.
- Your upcoming games will be listed. The schedule shown will be pulled from the Manage Schedule page in your Hudl.com account.
- Select the game you are tagging. Hudl will immediately ask you if you are playing or scouting the team you selected. Note: The first thing you’ll see is the scoreboard at the top of your screen. The football icon will indicate which team has possession.
- The What Happened? screen is the main screen in the app where you will be tagging each play as it happens.
- The first What Happened? screen will give you the kicking options. Four kicking options are available:
- Kickoff
- Received
- Onside Kick
- Receiving Onside Kick Note: The four kicking options will show up again immediately following every scoring play.
- After the first kicking play of the game, you will begin tagging the first possession. The main options available when tagging a play are:
- Run
- Spot The Ball: When you go to spot the ball, an image of a football field will appear on your screen. Simply touch the point on the field where the play ended. You can always click and drag your finger to the left or right to maneuver to other spots on of the field for long gains or losses. When you have selected the yard line to spot the ball, click the blue Done button. You will return to the main What Happened? screen where you can go on to tag the next play.
- Fumble: If there was a fumble on the run, you will first be asked to select which team recovered the ball. Then the image of the field will appear and you can spot the ball on the yard line it was recovered at.
- Penalty: If a penalty occurs, you will be asked to identify the resulting down after the penalty. You will also be asked to spot the ball on the resulting yard line.
- QB Sacked: If the quarterback is sacked, you will be asked to spot the ball using the same steps as before.
- Touchdown: If a touchdown is scored, you will be asked to enter the result of the extra point. If a 2-point conversion is attempted click on the Something else… option and enter the result of the conversion.
- Pass
- Complete: If the pass is complete, you will be asked to spot the ball on the yard line the play ended on. Do this the same way you spot the ball on the run plays. On the screen, touch the point on the field where the play ended and click Done.
- Incomplete: If the pass is incomplete, you will automatically be returned to the main What Happened? screen to tag the next down.
- Interception: If an interception occurs, you will be asked to spot the ball using the same steps as before. The possession will automatically be switched for you.
- QB Sacked: If the quarterback is sacked, you will be asked to spot the ball using the same steps as before.
- Penalty: If a penalty occurs, you will be asked to identify the resulting down after the penalty. You will also be asked to spot the ball on the resulting yard line.
- Something Else: The options under something else are QB Scramble, FG Attempt, and Punt.
- On 4th Down, Hudl will assume the most common option for the play is a punt. The Punt option will appear at the top. If the 4th down play is not a punt, select Something else… and you will see the options for a FG attempt, Run, Pass, QB Scramble, or Penalty.
- At the end of the game, you will select the End of Regulation option in the Game Progress area. When you select End of Regulation, you will be asked to continue to Overtime or End the Game. Once the game is over, the data you have inputted into the Hudl app will automatically be imported into your library so you can match it up with your video clips. Check out the Matching Tagged Data to Your Video Clips tutorial for instructions and help on how to do this.
Catch Up Button
If you get behind in the game, Don’t worry- this app makes it easy for you make the changes on Hudl.com after the game. Use the green Catch Up button if you accidentally miss a play or segment of the game. If you select Catch Up, you will identify who has possession of the ball, the current quarter, down, and distance. Hudl will continue tracking the game based on the current information. Use this button when you get behind, then you can fill in the missing data after you upload your data to Hudl.com.
Helpful Tips:
- You can tag the hash of the play by clicking on either the left or right hash when spotting the ball on the field screen.
- At the bottom of the What Happened? screen is the Game Progress area. This is where you will identify the end of the current quarter and the beginning of the next quarter.
- You can rotate your phone from portrait view to landscape view when spotting the ball so that the screen more accurately mirrors your view of the field.
