HD Capture Hardware Recommendations

This tutorial is specific to Sportscode v11. Have Hudl Sportscode, our newest product? Use these resources.

Refer to the recommendations on this page.

Recommended Capture Devices

The AJA U-TAP devices are highly recommended for Sportscode live capture. Simple setup, no drivers, and higher resolutions make these devices ideal for any scenario. If you have a 2017 or above MacBook Pro, you'll need to purchase a USB-C to USB adapter. Purchasing a second U-TAP as a backup is encouraged.

Pair either U-TAP device with a Decimator MD-HX Miniature HDMI/SDI Cross Converter for converting the signal to a desired resolution and utilize any HDMI/SDI connection.

Click here for instructions on setting up the U-TAP with Sportscode.

When compared to the Blackmagic Mini Recorder, the UTAP requires no drivers to function, includes a USB cable for your computer, can pull in up to 1080p60fps, and has no audio delay when capturing in Sportscode.

  2. Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder (2x)

This is another great option for capturing video via HDMI or SDI. It's portable, easy to use, and works great with Sportscode. The Thunderbolt cable isn't included, so be sure to purchase one here. Purchasing a second as a backup is highly encouraged.

The Mini Recorder requires a specific driver for use with Sportscode. Click here for setup information.

  3. Assorted Cables

    (2x) HDMI Cable

    (2x) SDI Cable (BNC Connector)

(2x) Thunderbolt 2 Cable (Blackmagic Mini Recorder only)

Picking up two of each cable will not only help you adapt to any situation, but ensure there's always a backup on hand.

Additional Capture Hardware

These tools are not necessarily needed for every capture but are required for certain situations.

  1. Thunderbolt Adapter

    Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)

This is required to connect a Blackmagic Mini Recorder to MacBooks made after late 2016.

  2. 1080i/720p Converter

Decimator MD-HX Miniature HDMI/SDI Cross Converter

This device displays the specifications of the incoming video feed for easier matching in Sportscode. It also allows you to convert any HD video signal into specified video resolutions and frame rates. Every scenario is different - this device ensures you're equipped for them all. This is strongly advised for all users in North America.

  3. HDMI Splitter

    ViewHD HDMI Splitter

If you're capturing from a DVR or cable box, you'll need one of these to capture that video feed in Sportscode.
