Set Up a Live Capture - Capture from a Cable / Satellite TV Box

This tutorial is specific to our newest product, Hudl Sportscode. If you’re on Sportscode v11, use these resources instead or upgrade today.

This article will detail how to capture video from a cable or satellite TV box as a video source using Hudl’s recommended capture device and HDMI splitter. See our Recommended Hardware for more information on these devices.

  1. Plug one end of the HDMI cord into the HDMI output port on the cable/satellite box.

  2. Make sure to plug in power to your HDMI splitter. Then plug the other end of the HDMI cord into the HDMI Input port on the HDMI splitter.

The HDMI splitter disables the High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) carried via the HDMI feed which allows you to capture in Sportscode.

  3. Plug one end of another HDMI cord to the HDMI Output 1 port on the HDMI splitter.

If you plug in another HDMI cord into the HDMI Output 2 port, this process may not work properly.

  4. Plug the other end of the second HDMI cord into the HDMI input port on the Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder.

  5. Plug one end of a Thunderbolt cord into the Mini Recorder and the other into the computer’s Thunderbolt port.

A Mini DisplayPort looks identical to a Thunderbolt port. Be sure the port you’re plugging your Mini Recorder into has the Thunderbolt symbol indicated (lightning bolt). If the device is properly plugged in, there should be a white light next to the Thunderbolt port on the Mini Recorder.

  6. Select HDMI as the input source in the Blackmagic Desktop Utility software.

  7. Open a new capture window in Hudl Sportscode and select Blackmagic as the video and audio sources.
