Use Highlights to Get Recruited

For players who might not be able to travel to camps or clinics, an impressive highlight reel can show up for them.

With the football season in full swing, it’s easy to look no further than Friday night. While you definitely want your team’s focus to remain on what’s left of the season, the plays they’re making now can be really important in the future.

Getting recruited by the right team can change an athlete’s life, whether they dream of playing big-time college ball or want hard work on the field to pay off in the form of scholarships. Hudl highlight reels are a solid way to get noticed – particularly if an athlete isn’t from a state or school known for great football. And for players who might not be able to travel to camps or clinics, an impressive highlight reel can show up for them.

Davis Brief, a senior at Warwick Valley High (N.Y.), knows how this story goes. He turned his highlights into multiple offers to play Div. I football.

My Hudl highlight film was the most important part of recruiting,” Davis said. I was able to easily create a highlight film to send out to all of the schools I was interested in, [and get] feedback from the coaches.”

Davis received offers from Cornell and Duke, and ultimately committed to Dartmouth in early August as a punter/kicker. My recruiting experience has been incredible, “ Davis explained. I’ve been able to see nine campuses and perform in front of the coaches.”

We know how important game video is to a team, for everything from film study to exchanges, but that same video contains the big plays an athlete needs to promote himself and advance to the next level. Creating highlights from the team’s game footage also allowed Davis’ dad, Eric, to celebrate his son’s final high school season.

It made our lives much easier and allowed me to enjoy his games instead of worrying about getting film.”

I would tell other athletes looking to get recruited that getting coaches to see you in person is the most important thing,” Davis said. Being able to perform live for a head coach trumps any email or phone call.”

A great highlight will get your foot in the door for those campus visits and one-on-ones Davis now swears by. Another benefit? It gives coaches the chance to see a player they might otherwise overlook.

Tagging highlights and creating awesome reels is easy — and it just might land your players a big opportunity. Once your team learns how to tag highlights, encourage players to promote themselves with custom reels.

Once title slides, spot shadows and music are added, you can send a recruiting package to any college coach for free — complete with transcripts and contact info.
