PGC Fast Break: Attack the Closeout

This drill will improve your team’s ability to read the defense on closeouts and help them recognize what their best move is.

The best offensive players know the defense is always wrong. Take away a driving line? Great offensive players will knock down the open shot. Close out too far? Time for the offense to attack the rim. In this week’s drill from PGC Basketball, athletes will practice making good reads on defensive closeouts, becoming the powerhouse players defenses struggle to stop.

This simple drill will improve your team’s ability to read the defense on closeouts and help them recognize what their best move is.

Attach the Closeout

The offensive player will use three different reads in this drill, with each read initiating its own offensive attack.

  • When the defense has an over closeout, the offensive player will attack the rim with a drive.
  • When the defense has an under closeout, the offensive player will take the open shot.
  • When the defense has a solid closeout, the offensive player must move the defender off his line to get a good shot.

In the first progression of this drill, the offense will know which defense is coming. This will teach your team to do the right thing at the right time.

You can then move to the second progression with a competitive live defense and force the offense to make important decisions at game speed.
