A few weeks back, we announced that Hudl Assist was getting an upgrade this season. In addition to all the insightful numbers provided previously, our analysts will now break down offensive formation, allowing coaches an easy avenue to sort through the video and find the exact teaching moments they need.
But that’s not all we’re adding. Starting this fall, Assist will add columns for defensive front and blitz. As the season approaches, we wanted to pull back the curtain and show exactly how our analysts will categorize these new additions.
We break down defensive front into four categories: odd, even, stack and split. These are determined by the structure and alignment of the defense in order to help you recognize when the opposition switches from their base defense.
Definition: There is an odd number of defensive linemen and the linebackers are positioned in the gaps behind them.
Examples: 3-4, 3-2, 5-2
Definition: There is an even number of defensive linemen and a linebacker is in line with the center.
Examples: 4-3, 4-1, 4-5
Definition: There is an odd number of defensive linemen and a linebacker is in line with the center.
Examples: 3-1, 3-3, 3-5, 5-1, 5-3
Definition: There is an even number of defensive linemen and linebackers are split on both sides of the center.
Examples: 4-2, 4-4, 6-2
To help you recognize when your opponents are bringing pressure, we’re counting the total number of rushers on a given play. This includes linemen who don’t quickly drop into coverage, players that attack the line of scrimmage on a run play and those rushing the quarterback on a pass.
Here's an example of a four-man rush:
And here's a five-man rush:
These new additions could go a long way in getting your team prepared each week. You’ll be able to sort through your video more quickly than ever, recalling any and all clips you need to study or teach your players.
