Delbarton High Uses Video to Make History

Head coach Matt Kovachik took his team to the top by digging deeper into their opponents’ tendencies.

The varsity boys’ lacrosse team at Delbarton High proved, once again, they’re the team to beat across the nation. Led by first-year head coach Matt Kovachik, the Green Wave made history this season by winning their final 13 games, a Tournament of Champions Title 3-peat, and claiming Laxpower’s #1 national lacrosse ranking.

While hard work, a deep talent pool, top-notch coaches and an exceptional team culture have helped this team excel, Delbarton also depends on a key tool to get them to the top—video.

It’s critical to the success we have on the field,” Kovachik said. We play a nationally ranked schedule every year. So being prepared and understanding our opponents, their strengths and tendencies and being able to learn from our own mistakes is a part of playing high school lacrosse at Delbarton.”

Although it’s Kovachik’s first year as a head coach for the program, he’s no rookie — he’s been the assistant coach for the varsity team for the last 18 years. During his tenure, Kovachik has grown to understand the value of video.

We have always had some use of video with our team. Back when I first started it was VHS, then that went to copying it to DVD. Then Hudl came on the scene it was just an obvious benefit and great platform to not only store film, but break down film, then share that film,” Kovachik said.

It was really an all-in-one tool for us to cover practice films, scout films, game film — anything that we do with our kids to use for teaching purposes.”

To be the best, you have to beat the best — and one way to it is developing a deep understanding of your opponent and their tendencies.

Honestly every game there is a moment that shows up on the film then it appears on the field,” Kovachik said. And certainly our kids can recognize the fact that they have seen that before, we have been able to talk about it in practice and prepare for it.”

Delbarton is able to pick apart their opponents before ever coming face-to-face with them.

If you’re using film, very little happens during a game without some prior understanding of it happening.” Matt Kovachik

The Green Wave take Hudl even further, using Hudl Assist to break down their video. They’re able to gain deeper insights through the provided data and reports.

The preparation is really critical. It’s been great to have the games stated and broken down for us. All the variety of data that comes from Hudl Assist is just fantastic,” Kovachik said.

Besides the extensive stats, Assist gives Kovachik and his players another major benefit — more time.

Our players are very busy with school work obviously and other responsibilities that they have off the field,” Kovachik said.

Through the sharing of smaller clips of film of our opponents, or being able to sort through the tags that Hudl Assist provides us, we again can really utilize the time we spend together but also the time we are away from each other, at home or over the weekend, so we can make sure we are constantly moving forward.”

Since the time he used to spend sorting through hours of video was dedicated to more important things, the Green Wave now gets to celebrate another successful season and state championship.
