Coach Q&A: How Hendersonville High Soccer Gets Efficient with Hudl Assist

High school soccer coach Russ Plummer discusses how Assist covers his game breakdowns and gives him more time to focus on key moments.

Our professional breakdown service Hudl Assist is designed to give coaches more time, improve their processes and help athletes see the link between their performance and their stats. But don’t take our word for it — hear it from Hendersonville High School (Tenn.) head soccer coach Russ Plummer, who’s been coaching for 32 years and says Assist helps his teams win.

Why did you add Assist?

We did it on a trial basis and, from a coaching standpoint, it helped us look at things quicker and easier and saved a lot of time. Once we introduced it to the kids, they jumped on it big time.

You log in to Hudl, and what’s the first thing you do after uploading?

It varies from game to game. I’m at the point now where I probably don’t look at the game film until it comes back from Hudl Assist, just because I know it’s going to save a lot of time.

When you watch film, you, as a coach or somebody, has to break it down to get what you want. If you try to show a complete half or whole game to your team, you’re going to lose a lot of kids’ interest. With Hudl Assist, we can look at all the shots, we can look at all the restarts. You can pick and choose what you want to see. Instead of watching film for 30 minutes, now we can do it in 15 and get more accomplished.

Do your players look at stats on their own, or just when you call attention to a specific play?

I would say both. Both sides are really anxious, “Okay, when’s it up?” Obviously when we sit and watch, we definitely point things out, and sometimes if we have a crazy week, we can’t have a film session, so we say, “Make sure you check this out in Hudl.”

How do your assistants use Assist reports?

I think sometimes they go into more detail than I do as far as the stats go. I’m more interested in what chances are we creating as opposed to how many shots a certain player had.

Do your players create individual highlights?

A lot of our kids do individual highlights, especially the kids that want to play at the next level. Over the three or four years that they’re playing they can make quite a few.

Does Hudl Assist help them make highlights?

I think it helps them find things quicker. If you’re a goalkeeper and you want to look at saves, boom, you’re right there.

Since you started using Assist in the spring, has it started shifting your coaching or practice plans?

You know, the film never lies. You may have one notion after the game that, “Wow we really did this well.” Well, after watching the film, we may have not done as well as we wanted to.

The time element is so huge. We’re able to look at things so much easier and quicker.

As opposed to me going home and watching two hours of film, I can go home and watch 30 minutes of film. You guys do all the hard work for us, and that’s huge. What you guys have done for the most part is kind of hard to beat.
