Braintree Town FC Uses Video to Provide Invaluable Insights to Players

We sat down to chat with Glenn Skingsley of Braintree Town FC to hear more about how they integrated Hudl, and how it helped them achieve success this past season.

Braintree Town Football Club, the National League side from Braintree, Essex, England, used video analysis for this first time this season. They finished third, one of the highest finishes in the club’s history.

We sat down to chat with Glenn Skingsley - who has been involved with the club for over 30 years and was involved with performance and video analysis this past season - to hear more about how they integrated Hudl, and how it helped them achieve success.

Tell us a little bit about Braintree Town FC for those who are unfamiliar with the club.

“We play in the top tier of English non-league football - the league directly below League Two. We have some young players at the club, a few ex-pros, but it’s mostly up and coming young players. Some had been at professional academies, but didn’t get a contract so they dropped out. Our finish was a massive achievement for a part-time football club.”

Why did you decide to try video analysis this season and how did you pick Hudl?

“There was no video analysis going on at the club prior to this past season. When Danny and Nicky Cowley took over at the beginning of the season, they were looking at doing video analysis, but they weren’t too sure on where to start. So I volunteered to do some research and find a software we could use.”

“I found some of the typical software that clubs use over here, like ProZone. They were way over our budget. So you start looking at some other software. The thing about Hudl was the ease of use. I could do everything as I wanted to do it. The ability to share it directly with the players with all of our notes was a huge factor. For what we needed, Hudl was ideal, and the price was very fair.”

Tell us how you used Hudl during the season?

“We played in over 40 games this past season, so everything was recorded and uploaded to Hudl. We’d then analyze the game. I’d sit down with the main coaches and ask them what they were looking for. We’d mainly break down set pieces, throw-ins, corners, shots on target, shots off target, chances created, etc. So we’d end up with playlists of about 20 specific things that we would analyze.”

“As a staff, we would add notes and drawings to the video, and from there we would share it directly to the players. The coaches could ring that player up, and they could talk over the phone and see the same thing. We didn’t even have to bring them in to do that. So then the time we had with them, two days a week, we could actually train.”

What did your players think of Hudl?

“The players found it invaluable. Telling them is one thing, but when you can actually show them, that’s when it’s really beneficial. You can say, ‘Oh you didn’t track your defender back here.’ With video analysis, you can actually show them and say, ‘Look, on this defense, you should have been here.’ Actually giving them real examples…it’s unparalleled. They could better understand their roles, both offensively and defensively, and our execution improved as a direct result.”

How did video analysis benefit you in training sessions?

“You can structure certain training methods, because you analyze the game back and you look at how each individual performed. You’re also looking at the opposition, and you can then tailor your training methods and your one-on-one coaching to highlight their strengths and weaknesses to get better.”

What would you say to a coach who is looking at using Hudl? Why should they pull the trigger?

“Why not? It’s invaluable. Us, as a part-time club, because we were only meeting up two times a week, it allowed us to get in contact with the players. It allowed us to get the message to them. We’d already prepped them before they even came in for training. If we didn’t have Hudl, we could have never done that.”
