How to edit video and data for a basketball project

More Resources

The purpose of this tutorial is to introduce the concept of adding and editing basketball specific breakdown data in the Hudl Video Editor.

Breakdown data helps add value to your video in Hudl. With breakdown data, you can identify basic data such as whether the play was offensive or defensive and you can also add specific statistical breakdowns for each individual player. You can add breakdown data during capture, after capture or on Hudl.com.

This tutorial starts with a pre-created Hudl Video Editor project with video added. For more information about creating a project and capturing video see the Hudl Video Editor First Steps tutorial.

Setup the Roster

The first step in taking advantage of basketball breakdown data is setting up your roster. This step is not necessary but can be used for tracking statistics. Once you enter your roster, it will carry forward through each play until you change it. You can edit your roster in both the Basic Breakdown and the Detailed Breakdown panels described below.

  1. Click the name of the team you want to edit.
  2. The Manage Rosters dialog will appear. Click the Add button to add a player.
  3. Enter the First Name, Last Name, Jersey #, and Position (only the last name or the jersey # is required) and press OK to add the player.
  4. Repeat steps 2-3 for each player you want to add to the roster.
  5. Click Done when you are done adding players to the roster.
  6. To set a player as active, click the + sign in an empty row and chose the player from the roster that appears.
  7. To substitute a player, move your mouse over the player for which you wish to make a substitution, then click the Sub button that appears.  Choose a player from the roster that appears.

Edit Video Data

In the Hudl Video Editor, there are three areas to edit video data for a possession: the Basic Breakdown panel, the Detailed Breakdown panel, and the clips list. This tutorial will explain each area.

Basic Breakdown

The Basic Breakdown panel allows you to quickly tag information specific to the possession for the entire team. To use the Basic Breakdown panel after capture, a possession must be active in the video player.

  1. Click the Basic Breakdown button at the top-right side of the Hudl Video Editor.
  2. Activate a possession in the video player by clicking the blue play icon at the far left side of a clip row. The possession will begin playing in the video player.
  3. Click any option in the Basic panel to set that value for the possession. All selections will be automatically saved, however, you can hit the Undo button to undo your last action.
    • Offense Possession: Click to set the clip as an offensive possession.
    • Defense Possession: Click to set the clip as a defensive possession.
    • End: Click this to end the current possession. Click the side arrow to specify how the possession ended (including make, defensive rebound, turnover, foul, timeout, out of bounds, violation, jump ball, or end of quarter). Alternatively, you can click or type one of the following commands:
      • Ctrl+M: Make
      • Ctrl+D: Def. Rebound
      • Ctrl+F: Foul
      • Ctrl+T: Steal
  4. You can also assign specific stats to a player or the team from the basic breakdown panel.

To assign stats to a specific player, click the box next to their name (it will have their jersey #, if available) and select one of the actions for the possession.

To assign specific stats to the team, click the Team button found at the top of your roster. Select one of the actions to assign it to the team. This can be valuable for opponent scout where you may not care about individual stats.

Detailed Breakdown

The Detailed Breakdown panel allows you to quickly tag information specific to individual players in the possession on a court. This information can be used for some of Hudl’s visual reports such as the shot chart. To use the Detailed Breakdown panel after capture, a possession must be active in the video player.

  1. Click the Detailed Breakdown button at the top-right side of the Hudl Video Editor.
  2. Activate a possession in the video player by clicking the blue play icon at the far left side of a clip row. The possession will begin playing in the video player.
  3. Click on a player on your roster and then on the court to set the position for the player. By default, a made shot will be created at that position. Click on the player’s icon on the court to toggle through the available options which include made shot, missed shot, offensive rebound, defensive rebound, assist, and turnover. The information will be shown in the data box found under the court.
  4. If you wish to add a block, steal, or personal foul, or you don’t care to assign a rebound, turnover, or assist position on the court, you do so by clicking on a player from your roster and clicking the corresponding heading in the data list.
  5. Click the arrow on the right side of each row of the data list to add characteristics (such as off balance or contested) to each action. Choose an action from the corresponding popup list that appears to assign a characteristic.

Clips List

The easiest way to edit data in the Hudl Video Editor is by editing the clips list which is under the video player. The clips list allows you to edit any data for a possession at any time, regardless of what clip is playing.

  1. Each row in the clips list corresponds to a specific possession. Click in any cell in that row to edit the data for that possession.
  2. Select a value from the drop-down box or type your own value in the cell. Some columns, such as Possession, are restricted to a set of predefined values.
  3. Click in another cell or press the TAB button on your keyboard to move to another cell. Your changes will be automatically saved.
