Video Introduction
The purpose of this tutorial is to demonstrate the concept of single angle tape capture from a video camera in Hudl Video Editor.
In Hudl, you are able to capture video from a tape in your camera. This provides a quick solution to importing video from previous seasons, opponent scout tapes, or any other video you did not capture directly into the Video Editor. Once you capture from the tape, you can interact with the video just like any other captured video in the Hudl Video Editor.
Before starting this tutorial, go to the Hudl Video Editor and create a project. For more information about accessing Hudl Video Editor and creating a project, see the Hudl Video Editor First Steps tutorial.
Setup Tape Capture
- Open Hudl Video Editor and select a project.
- If you haven’t already, plug your camera into your computer via firewire. Note: Most video cameras cannot stream video via USB. It must be a firewire connection. If your camera does not have a firewire output, you may need to use a canopus box to connect your camera to your computer.
- Click the Add Video button at the bottom of the Video Editor.
- The Add Video dialog will appear. Select whether you would like to add the video to a new angle or append it to an existing angle already in the project.
- Click Start Capture.
- The Pick Capture Source dialog window will appear. Select your camera from the list. If your camera is not listed, click the Refresh button.
- Select the correct option under the Pre-recorded Video heading based on how your tape was recorded:
- The video is was split into clips on the camera: The person who has captured the video has used the record/pause buttons on the camera to split the video into clips while recording (this is most likely the case for sports like football or volleyball).
If you want Hudl to automatically cut this video into clips, your options for this video are: Auto-cut video from DV camera or to Auto-cut video from Canopus or other advice - The video is one continuous recording on the camera: The video hasn’t been split into clips yet (this is most likely the case for sports like basketball or soccer).
If your video isn’t cut on the camera or you just want to cut the video yourself, select the Cut video myself option. - Set the camera to playback mode but do not start playback on the camera yet.
- The video is was split into clips on the camera: The person who has captured the video has used the record/pause buttons on the camera to split the video into clips while recording (this is most likely the case for sports like football or volleyball).
Capture from a Tape
- The video window should now be blank. When you are ready to begin capturing, press play on the attached camera. Then, click the Record button in the Hudl Video Editor to begin capturing video.
- If you selected Auto-cut video from DV camera or Auto-cut video from Canopus or other device, your video will automatically be put into clips.
If you did not select an auto-cut option you will need to manually create the clips. To begin creating a play, press the In button on the video player. When the play has finished, press the Out button. Once the out button has been pressed, the clip will be added to the clips list below the video player. - When you are done capturing film from your attached device, press the End Capture button. The Video window will clear once the capture has ended.
Now that you have added video to Hudl Video Editor, the next step is to edit your video data or add another angle. Learn how to edit your data in the Editing Video Data in Hudl Video Editor tutorial. Learn how to add another angle in the Intercut Multiple Angles tutorial.
