This is a rundown of everything you'll need to use Hudl.com on a PC or Mac and Hudl Video Editor on a PC.

Tutorials

Do I need to purchase new hardware to run Hudl?

No. Hudl is designed to work with your existing hardware. You can access Hudl.com on any computer with an internet connection and capture video on any standard Windows computer.

You can also use whatever camera you currently have. Click here to see a list of camera recommendations.

What are the recommended system requirements for the Hudl Video Editor?

The Hudl Video Editor can run on nearly any Windows machine, although the following list includes our suggested minimum requirements:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
  • Windows XP, Vista, or 7
  • 2GB RAM
  • 50GB hard drive space for video capture and publishing

If you are using a Mac, you’ll need an Intel-based processor (new Macs within the last 3 years should have this) and will need to use a program called BootCamp (which is free) to install and run Windows on your Mac. The Windows license is not free, but your school may have one you can use. Once you publish the video to Hudl.com, you can use any computer (Mac or PC) and get the full Hudl experience.

There may be other requirements depending on your method of capture. For instance, if you wish to capture from a DVD, you will need a DVD drive on your computer.

If you wish to capture from a MiniDV camera, you will need a Firewire port built in or an external card.

Will Hudl work on a Mac?

Yes. You will use Hudl Mercury for Mac to upload your video to Hudl.com. See more about that here

What hardware do I need in Hudl?

Hudl has been designed to work on both PC and Mac computers. The Hudl Video Editor is designed to work in Windows, therefore, you will need at least one Windows computer to capture video and get it into Hudl.com.

On PCs, you do not need any special hardware to run Hudl but we recommend a computer with at least a 1 GHz processor and at least 2GB RAM, but this is not required.

For Macs, you will need to have an Intel-based processor.  You can download Bootcamp for your Mac, which will allow you to capture film using the Video Editor.

On Hudl.com, you will need to install Silverlight, the underlying technology used in Hudl.  For more information about the minimum system requirements necessary for Silverlight, see the Silverlight system requirements page.

Which web browsers will Hudl work with?

Hudl will work in Internet Explorer (IE) 7+, 8+, and 9+, Firefox 2+, 3+, and 4+, Google Chrome, and Safari 3.

What type of internet connection do I need to use Hudl.com?

Hudl is a video-intensive web application and works great on home DSL and Cable internet connections as well as school networks, including wireless internet connections.

If you are unsure of the speed of your internet connection, you can test your connection speed at the following site: http://www.speedtest.net

What software do I need to use Hudl?

Hudl runs entirely in your web browser, so you do not need any separate software. To watch video on Hudl.com, you’ll need to have Microsoft’s Silverlight 4 installed.

You can download and install Silverlight 4 for free from Microsoft. For detailed Silverlight instructions, see Microsoft’s installation instructions.

For the members of your team that are capturing video from cameras or DVDs, they will need to install our free Hudl Video Editor, Hudl Mercury, or Mercury for Mac, which can be downloaded from your Dashboard page as soon as you sign up and log in.
