What sources of video can I use with Hudl Mercury?

Hudl Mercury will load film from a DVD, hard drive camera, or media files on your computer. You will need to use the Hudl Video Editor to capture video from a MiniDV tape (whether pre-recorded or live).

What is Hudl Mercury, anyway?

Hudl Mercury is a super-simple, super-fast way to get video off of your tapeless camera, DVDs, or media files and upload it to Hudl.com.

It’s basically a “hands free” version of the Hudl Video Editor. It doesn’t have as many features but it’s much sleeker and more straightforward.

Why can’t I create more than 25 highlights on single game?

Hudl imposes a 25-highlight limit per game per athlete. This limit provides a safeguard for coaches against abuse.

When an athlete tries to highlight too many clips, Hudl displays a warning. Coaches can always highlight more than 25 clips for an athlete.

What are “private” highlights and video angles?

Coaches get the final say on whether video they’ve uploaded is public (visible to anyone who visits Hudl) or private (only visible to logged-in members of the team). If you’re an athlete or a parent of an athlete, this means that some aspects of your highlights are out of your control.

Let us explain what we mean:

Private vs. Public Highlights

By default, clips marked as highlights for an individual (or for the entire Team) are public in Hudl. So, when you send a link to Grandma, Uncle Bob in Iraq, or a college recruiter, they can view your highlighted videos with no restraints.

However, some coaches are not comfortable having highlights publicly available for competitive reasons. We let those coaches “opt-out” and mark their whole team’s highlights as private.

If you’re a logged-in member of the team, you will still be able to see and interact with your highlights. But if you share that page with others, they’ll see a message explaining that the team’s highlights are private.

Private Video Angles

If a coach wants to keep the team’s highlights public (as most do), they can still restrict access to certain angles of video. For example, it’s typical in football for coaches to record two angles: one from the press-box (called “Sideline” or “Wide”) and one from the end-zone behind the field goal posts (called “End-Zone”). Most coaches prefer not to include their End-Zone footage in any highlights.

That’s why Hudl gives coaches an option to toggle on or off any angle of video.

But, there’s a catch!

  • Sometimes angles are named incorrectly (e.g. the “End-Zone” angle really is the “Wide” view).
  • Sometimes only one angle is available for a certain clip (the other cameraman fell asleep).

If either of these things happen, a clip you mark as a highlight might not show up correctly to someone outside of your team.

Long story short: the team’s coaches are the highlights gatekeepers. If your highlights aren’t public but you think they should be, explain your position to your coach. Let us know how we can help.

My account is on hold, but we’ve submitted a PO and payment is out of my hands. What do I do?

When we have a purchase order on file from the school or sponsor, we would rather your account stay open while they work on sending us payment.  We can’t technically mark the account as paid, so we will extend the account to a later date to allow time for payment to reach us.  In this situation, payment may not have reached us even in that extended time, and your account is letting you know time is almost up.

As I mentioned before, we would rather your account stay open when we have a purchase order.  Please give us a call or send us an email to let us know you are seeing that notification, and we’ll can work with you on extending the trial.

How long will it take to receive my highlight DVD?

DVDs are processed in the order they are placed, and mailed out 1-3 days after they are processed. Once the DVD is mailed, you will receive an email from Hudl confirming your DVD has been shipped complete with a tracking number to see exactly where your DVD is. We send the DVDs from our office in Lincoln, Neb. so just check your tracking number to see the status of your DVD.

Why should I pay an annual fee, as opposed to paying up front and owning a system?

You’re guaranteed to have the most current features we have to offer as Hudl.com and the Hudl Video Editor are updated. You don’t pay additional annual fees for upgrades and support.

Because Hudl has no upfront costs, it would take at least four or five years of purchasing Hudl to reach the same amount as the upfront cost of other systems that are often accompanied by several other maintenance and upgrade fees. Hudl really is just one price for the whole year. That’s it.

Since we aren’t getting all your money up front and never ask for more than a year commitment, we’re always in a position to earn your business.

We make sure you have an amazing experience with Hudl so you renew the next year. That’s accountability. We don’t like paying a bunch of money up front for software that will be out of date in a year, and we know coaches don’t like to either.

How does the 30-day free trial work?

We want everyone to experience just how powerful Hudl is without feeling locked in. During the first 30-days you can get the full experience of Hudl to make sure it fits you and your team’s workflows. You can cancel at anytime and you will not be charged at all. During the trial, your full Hudl account is available to you, so all the work you do during the trial stays with you after you are out of the trial and officially using Hudl.

What types of payment do you accept?

Currently, you can pay via credit card online or you can print your invoice off from your account and send that in with a check. We offer a 5% discount to teams that sign up via credit card.

Can I use Hudl to exchange video to a team that doesn’t use Hudl?

The Hudl Exchange feature cannot be used to exchange with teams that are not in Hudl.

Our recommendation: continue exchanging with the non-Hudl teams the way you do now - DVD, external hard drive, some other exchange service - you will still come out way ahead because Hudl can load, cut, and distribute the video much faster than whatever they have.

The work-around: You can use Hudl’s recruiting features to send video to a non-Hudl team. This will allow you to send video to a coach as though they were a recruiter. We don’t recommend or officially support this work-around for a couple reasons:

  1. The opposing team is going to get your video immediately, but you will have to wait to get video from them, as they don’t have a Hudl account.
  2. When you share the video to them as a recruiter, they will be able to see basic data (down, distance, ODK, run/pass, yard line, gain/loss) on each clip. You can’t turn that ability off when using the recruiting tools, only during a legitimate exchange with another Hudl team.

I had a discount code that I forgot to enter when I first signed up - can I still get the discount?

If you forgot to add the discount code when you signed up, or the discount code was not recognized on your invoice, you’ll want to get in touch with us.  Just let us know the name of your school and the discount code, and we will apply it to the invoice.

This is another situation where you will need to contact us so that we can change your account information – call us at 402-817-0060 or email us at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).  The 5% Credit Card discount will be removed from the invoice as well.

Any benefit to paying by check, Purchase Order, or credit card?

Keep in mind the system will also automatically run the credit card on the last day of the 30-Day Free Trial!

As a coach, can I send out highlights for my players?

I have more than one video angle of the same game. Can I cut them together in Hudl Video Editor?

Yes, the Hudl Video Editor can automatically intercut multiple angles of your film together. Hudl isn’t limited to just two angles. You can either add the second angle after the game is over and match it up then or you can capture both angles live during the game if you are able to connect both cameras to your laptop. If you video a wide, tight, and end zone or want to match up a close-up angle from the sideline, Hudl can handle that, too.

I’ve invested a lot of time in my current system. Will I lose all my work and video if I switch?

In most cases, Hudl can actually import your video and data from your current system into Hudl, giving you all the benefits of Hudl with your old game film. So, instead of losing your work, you have the power of Hudl for your previous seasons’ video without any extra work.

Are there any shortcuts for Hudl Video Editor?

Yes. View the shortcuts for Hudl Video Editor.

Print that page for quick reference. It’s also available from the Help menu within Hudl Video Editor.

Can multiple coaches use the Hudl Video Editor at the same time?

Yes, every coach has the option to download the Hudl Video Editor onto as many computers as they would like.  From there, everyone can simultaneously capture, breakdown, or publish video from the Hudl Video Editor to your team’s Hudl.com account. For example, you can publish your game and the opponent scout film in one night from different laptops to have it all available to your team as soon as possible.

How long does it take to publish my video to Hudl.com once I’ve captured it?

A football or basketball game typically takes between 1.5 to 3 hours to completely publish to Hudl.com.

Hudl publishes each clip individually so within 30 seconds or so, you can watch the first play online. Within about 20 minutes, most of the first quarter will be available.

You don’t have to wait for the full game to finish to start working with your video and sharing it with the team on Hudl.com. The publishing process runs completely on its own. While your video is publishing, you can walk away, grab a bite to eat or go to sleep. When you come back, your game will be ready for you (and anyone else you shared it with) online at Hudl.com.

Can I use a remote control for video playback in the Hudl Video Editor?

Yes, we recommend using the Smart Pointer remote to control your playback. You can also use a wired or wireless Xbox 360™ remote to control video playback in Hudl Video Editor.

"How to" tutorials on this subject:

"How to" tutorials on this subject:

How long does it take to break down a game in Hudl? Is it hard to do?

The time it takes to breakdown a game varies based on the level of detail to the information recorded on each clip. With Hudl, since multiple coaches can break down a game at the same time, the process is significantly shorter.

Hudl’s auto-complete feature enters data based on values you’ve already entered. Quick-entry drop-down lists for football, basketball and volleyball make break down even more efficient.

"How to" tutorials on this subject:

Can I import my video and data from my current editing system?

In most cases, Hudl can import projects from your current editing system so you can use the power of Hudl with all of your old video and data. Currently, Hudl can import video and data from DSV, APEX, Game Plan/Coach Comm, Webb Electronics, and LRS.

If you use a system other than those listed or need help with the process in general, contact us and we’ll help you figure out a solution.

Does the Hudl Video Editor work on a Mac?

Because the Hudl Video Editor requires Microsoft’s .NET 3.5 framework, it does not natively work on a Mac. That said, you can use BootCamp to install Windows on your machine and then install the Video Editor. This will allow you to capture and publish from a Mac (through Windows).

The good news about Hudl is that once you publish your video to Hudl.com, you can do everything else from a Mac. So you really only need one computer with Windows to publish your film and once it is online you can tag breakdown data, make cutups, share, and take advantage of everything else Hudl has to offer.

What cameras work with the Hudl Video Editor?

The Hudl Video Editor can live capture from a MiniDV camera and can load video files directly from a hard drive camera as soon as the game or practice is over.

Hudl can also capture video from a miniDVD camera through its DVD ripping feature.

You should also read our list of recommended cameras for Hudl on our blog.

"How to" tutorials on this subject:

Can I load video from a DVD into the Hudl?

Yes, Hudl Video Editor offers integrated DVD ripping. You simply place a DVD in your computer, Hudl loads it automatically in 5-10 minutes, and all you have to do is mark the beginning of each play, point, possession, etc. to cut the video into individual clips. No extra hardware is required.

"How to" tutorials on this subject:

What are the recommended system requirements for the Hudl Video Editor?

The Hudl Video Editor can run on nearly any Windows machine, although the following list includes our suggested minimum requirements:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
  • Windows XP, Vista, or 7
  • 2GB RAM
  • 50GB hard drive space for video capture and publishing

If you are using a Mac, you’ll need an Intel-based processor (new Macs within the last 3 years should have this) and will need to use a program called BootCamp (which is free) to install and run Windows on your Mac. The Windows license is not free, but your school may have one you can use. Once you publish the video to Hudl.com, you can use any computer (Mac or PC) and get the full Hudl experience.

There may be other requirements depending on your method of capture. For instance, if you wish to capture from a DVD, you will need a DVD drive on your computer.

If you wish to capture from a MiniDV camera, you will need a Firewire port built in or an external card.

Do I have to pay extra for the Hudl Video Editor?

"How to" tutorials on this subject:

Can I create playlists on Hudl with just the video clips that I want?

Yes. Creating playlists (aka cutups or edits) is a great way to produce a focused set of video clips for your team. Custom playlists ensure that your team is watching exactly what they need to prepare. Delivering these playlists is easy through Hudl’s built-in sharing features. You can create a playlist by checking the clips you want manually or using Hudl’s filters to find all of the videos of a certain situation (e.g. all your opponents’ passes on third and long, all of your kills out of rotation three, or all of your three point makes).

"How to" tutorials on this subject:

Can I see data in a different way than other coaches?

Data on Hudl.com is shared by all coaches but you can customize your personal view of it. As a defensive coach, you might not be interested in seeing information in columns designed for the offense—you can hide those from your view.

  • Burn DVDs
  • Copy video to their hard drive

We do this to keep the video and data secure for your team. Players can only see the video and data you share with them—coaches have complete control over the video.

"How to" tutorials on this subject:

Can my players watch video in Hudl?

You are in complete control of the storage and can remove any old practice film with one click. Once your video is published to your team site on Hudl, you can remove the captured video from your computer, so you no longer need to worry about hard drive space on your computer or maintaining several external hard drives.

What is the video quality like in Hudl?

We use high quality, compressed video for Hudl.com. We make it as crisp as possible (while keeping it reasonable to stream and download from the web) when you are presenting to the team on a projector or TV in full screen mode.

In Hudl Video Editor, you always have access to your original, uncompressed footage (as long as you’ve got the hard drive space to store it).

Can I create tendency reports in Hudl?

Hudl has several built-in reports for football, basketball, and volleyball. All sports can create custom reports that slice and dice the data however you like.

"How to" tutorials on this subject:

Will Hudl work on a Mac?

At this time, there isn’t a Mac version of the Hudl Video Editor. The Hudl Video Editor requires Microsoft .NET which Apple doesn’t support, so the Video Editor won’t run in the Mac operating system. That said, you can use Boot Camp to install Windows on your machine and then install the Video Editor. This will allow you to capture and publish from a Mac (through Windows).

Once you publish your video to Hudl.com, you can do everything else from a Mac because from there, the system is web-based. You really only need one computer with Windows to publish your film and once it is online you can tag breakdown data, make cutups, share, and take advantage of everything else Hudl has to offer.

Mac users can’t use the Xbox 360™ remote or create voice recordings at this time.

What hardware do I need in Hudl?

For Macs, you will need to have an Intel-based processor.  You can download Bootcamp for your Mac, which will allow you to capture film using the Video Editor.

On Hudl.com, you will need to install Silverlight, the underlying technology used in Hudl.  For more information about the minimum system requirements necessary for Silverlight, see the Silverlight system requirements page.

Absolutely. Hudl gives you the ability to limit how your video is distributed. You can keep the video to yourself, share video only with other coaches on your team, your entire team, or just certain players with a few simple clicks.

The first thing to do would be to check that your email is entered correctly on the Profile page in Hudl. Assuming your email is correctly identified, then the email was probably blocked by your email’s spam filter. If you are not receiving emails from Hudl, you should check your Spam or Junk Mail folder for email correspondence from Hudl. If emails from Hudl are continually identified as junk mail, you should ensure to include Hudl’s email (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) on your safe list.

Why is the PO Number area on my invoice blank?

As soon as we receive a purchase order for the Hudl purchase, we will add the PO number to the invoice.  Odds are it means we simply haven’t received the purchase order yet, but we’d recommend contacting us to make sure: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or 402-817-0060.

I need an invoice for Hudl – how can I get one?

Your Hudl invoice is always available to you on your Hudl account.  It is first generated minutes after you first sign up for Hudl.  When you log in to Hudl, click on the “My Accounts” link in the upper-right hand corner of the screen.

From there, click on the “Billings & Invoices” tab.  You should see a summary of your invoices. Click on the magnifying glass icon to take a look at the invoice, or click on the printer icon to immediately print the invoice.

Why do I have an invoice if I’m still in the trial and haven’t committed yet?

Hudl automatically generates an invoice on your account minutes after you sign up.  The invoice is not a requirement for you to pay for Hudl—we simply provide it to you as soon as possible for your convenience.  That way, if you do decide to continue using Hudl after the 30 Day Free Trial, you can easily get a copy of your invoice.

What if my account is on hold?

You are actually still able to log in to Hudl and access “My Accounts.”  Your account will be restricted from viewing video, but you can still access your account information and invoices.

Who do we make our Hudl payment check out to?

Checks can be made out to “Agile Sports Technologies” or “Hudl.”

Why do I get a notice saying “Ready w/in 1 hr.”  when I check my invoice?

Whenever we make a change to your invoice (due date, pricing, discounts, PO number), our system needs to work through the new information and generate a new invoice for your account on Hudl.  It probably won’t take the full hour, but if you see it take longer, let us know.  Send an email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or call us at 402-817-0060.
