Use Hudl with Your Freshman and JV Teams

Using Hudl to scout your Varsity squad’s upcoming opponents, delivering film corrections to your Varsity players outside of practice, sharing out last night’s game to your starters - all great ways to use Hudl. But, if you’re only using Hudl for your Varsity players you’re missing out.

A great benefit of Hudl is the ability to create teams on your account for all levels of your program.  If you are a team that is linked through MaxPreps, you can create four teams for your program.  This will allow you to create a team for each level: Varsity, Junior Varsity, Sophomore, and Freshman.  Once you have created a team for each level, take these steps to fully utilize Hudl.

Put Game Film Online

Players at the lower levels rarely get to see film of their games.  Be sure to send an extra assistant or manager along to film the games.  If no staff members are able to film, parents are often willing to help out. Then after the game, publish the film to Hudl.com.  Once the film is up, your coaches and players are able to see great plays or mistakes that they normally couldn’t see from the sideline.

Use Notes to Deliver Corrections

Lower level players spend most of practice running scout team plays and rarely have a chance to spend a lot of time running the system they will be using in games.  Marking corrections on the film you upload will give younger players a chance to learn the nuances of your system and will accelerate their learning in practice.

Utilize Highlights

That sophomore linebacker on your team probably won’t show up on the end of the year Varsity highlight film, but with Hudl he can have his own highlight reel!  Let the players mark highlights on their game film.  This will not only allow the player to brag up his big plays on his Facebook page, but it will also give parents who couldn’t make it to the game the ability to watch their son or daugther’s best moments.

Exchange Film with the Varsity Team

Coaching a lower level team can sometimes feel like coaching on the fly.  Coaches don’t usually have game film to analyze or tendency reports to view to help determine their game plan.  If the varsity and lower level teams have a common opponent - use Hudl’s exchange feature to give your coaches an idea of the formations and plays their opponent will run.  When using Hudl’s film exchange, be sure to include all the data you have entered so your coaches don’t have to re-enter all that information.  This will go a long way in allowing your coaches to develop their own style of scouting and game planning and it prevents them from flying blind when play calling.

Add Your JV and Freshman Teams to MaxPreps

New this school year MaxPreps is covering JV and Freshmen teams. Varsity coaches can add lower level teams inside the MaxPreps Coach Admin.
