Team Highlights & Pages, Easy Basketball Breakdown

Team Highlights are Easy with Hudl

It’s been a month since our last release and we’ve already got another one. As always, leave us your thoughts in the comments section. Your feedback is the reason we can continue making Hudl better and better.

Here’s what’s new and changed in this release:

Team Highlights

How to Make a Team Highlight in Hudl

Sometimes, the whole team deserves a highlight. Maybe your line executed their blocks perfectly and sprang your tailback for a big gain. The ELOB play you practiced all week paid off in the 4th quarter—make it a team highlight.

They work the same as athlete highlights. Just click the star icon in your clips list and choose Team Highlight.

These highlights will show up on your new…

Improved Team Pages

How to Get to Hudl Team Page

The old Team page was a bit cramped. We designed it a long time ago before we knew how coaches would really use Hudl. This is a page you can share with family, friends and fans. It has a larger roster and schedule which serve as launching pads to other Team and Athlete pages.

This is a page that we’ll continue to improve over the coming months. Let us know what you’d like to see here.

Easier Basketball Breakdown

Easier Hudl Basketball Breakdown

Unlike our football breakdown tools in Video Editor, our old basketball breakdown tools weren’t very quick—you couldn’t keep up with the pace of the game if you wanted to breakdown a live game. We fixed that.

We show you all the keyboard shortcuts right on top of big buttons that do most of the work.

After the game is over, you can go back through all the actions you recorded for your team, assign them to individual players and “place them on the court” so Hudl can build your team and individual shot charts.

Auto Scene Detection in Video Editor

Cutting footage into clips can be tedious. Our video guru, Bryce, spent a lot of time building “scene detection” into the editor. Basically, when the video changes drastically or sharply (e.g. exactly what happens when you stop recording and start 10 seconds later), we call that a scene and create a clip from it.

For some sports it doesn’t work as well. If your camera operator records the whole game as one, giant continuous stream (without ever stopping), we won’t be able to detect individual scenes.

This will be another option to “auto-cut” film when you create projects in Hudl Video Editor. It should save you a lot of time.

Other New Features and Changes

  • Select multiple clips with the Shift key on your Library page.
  • Share your Team and Athlete pages on Facebook and Twitter. Just click the icons on those pages.
  • Cleaner and clearer breakdown controls for Volleyball in Hudl Video Editor.
  • Coaches now have full control to permanently delete players from their teams. Doing this will remove all highlights for that player. Use disable if the player graduated or ‘gracefully’ left the team.

I love this program and so does the rest of our staff. We have some who refuse to watch film any other way including me!

I would like to see the autofill function that pops up when I try to input a playcall be more user friendly. Sometimes I have to mis-spell words or change stuff around because it keeps putting in the wrong play. I am sure you will fix this however. Keep up the good work!

Hi John,

Glad to hear that you are loving Hudl!

With respect to cleaning up the auto-complete with data entry, we agree and so do quite a few other coaches. In fact, this has already been requested on our feedback site at http://feedback.hudl.com

To see this specific request, you can visit the request’s page at http://feedback.hudl.com/pages/31683-hudl/suggestions/373877-deleting-old-breakdown-data?ref=title

Would it be possible to add a link from the Athletes Highlight Page to create a Playlist, or to add a feature to the Editor to Import a specific athletes Highlights?
Currently I have to check every game and then filter on the player, and then create the Playlist so I can download it.

The update on auto-scene detection is great.  Do you have any advice for making certain that the cuts are recognized?  Also, is there a way to incorporate missed cuts that the auto-scene detection system misses?

GREAT WORK!

Matt Mueller on 11/18 @ 11:04 PM

Mike - That’s a great request. I know we are always working on improving that workflow but I would recommend going to our feedback page - http://feedback.hudl.com - and adding it there. I know our developers will see this but adding it there will give you a more finite way to track it.

One thing I would recommend is putting the onus for creating the playlist on your players. Once they create the playlist, have them share it to you and it will save you some time.

Matt Mueller on 11/18 @ 11:08 PM

Ben - Glad to hear you like the scene detection. The biggest thing for the auto-scene detection is to make sure there is actually a stop (not a fade) between each play even on the DVD. As long as there is distinct clips, Hudl should pick them up.

We errored on the side of not cutting too much (so you may have some merged clips), so we added the Split feature. To use it, simply play to the spot in the clip that you want to split and click the Split button (at the bottom of the Video Editor). The clip will be cut in two.

If by chance we auto-split a clip into two clips (or you did it yourself), you can select two clips and click Merge (At the bottom of the Video Editor) to merge the clips into one clip.

If you have more questions about this, contact our support department. They can walk you through this step-by-step.

Our staff loves Hudl and everything it does. We have a ways to go to get full use out of Hudl. Do you have plans in the future to have a way to tranfer
notes from Hudl.com to the editor so that I could put those on a DVD. I know everything is going toward cloud based, but it would be nice to still have a hard copy of the notes to show players maybe the next season what other players did right or wrong.

Matt Mueller on 12/01 @ 04:33 PM

Hi Brian,

At this time we don’t have a plan to pull notes down to a DVD.

We are looking at different options to allow users to save their presentations, which would include notes, in an offline viewer. This would give you an offline copy; however, saving video notes onto a cutup DVD is not something we are currently working on.

All that said, feel free to request it on our feedback site at http://feedback.hudl.com
