Hudl Acquires DSV

DSV logo
I’m very excited to announce that Hudl has acquired Digital Sports Video (DSV).

Please take a few minutes to read this post and I’ll explain what this means to you as a current Hudl partner.

Who is DSV?

They’re a well-established video editing company based in Reno, Nev. DSV has built a loyal customer base of more than 3,000 high schools that use their software and they have more than 10 years of expertise in sports video.

How does this deal benefit me as a coach, athletic director, or recruiter?

If you’re already using Hudl, you probably won’t notice much change. But there are some great benefits to consolidating DSV and Hudl’s customer bases:

  • More teams to exchange video with. DSV touts some of the nation’s best sports programs and starting today you’ll be able to instantly trade film with them.
  • A broader pool of athletes with video for recruiters. This is a win-win for everyone. More athletes means more video, which in turn means more exposure to recruiters (and vice versa).
  • Even better tools for you as a coach. We’ll be incorporating feedback from both of our companies’ experiences and all of our coaches’ knowledge to make Hudl even better.

If I’m currently using Hudl, is there anything I need to do?

Nope. For current Hudl partners, there is no change.

Keep using the software, contacting support, and giving us feedback as you normally would. Over the next few months, many of DSV’s former customers will become Hudl partners.

Why did Hudl decide to acquire DSV? Aren’t you competitors?

DSV has built an incredibly broad, passionate, and loyal customer base. Why? Because they have great products and back them up with great support. In that way, we’re a lot alike—we both want to help coaches win. However, our products are in a better long-term position to help coaches do that.

Technologically, our team can better react to new advances and incorporate them into Hudl. Our products were built from the ground up to work well online and with new mobile technologies like Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android platforms. That’s where the sports video industry is headed.

What does this mean for the future of Hudl?

Our mission and values remain unchanged: we’re here to help coaches and their teams win. That means creating new and amazing experiences around our products, staying up-to-date with the latest technologies, and providing world-class support.

With an even larger number of teams using Hudl, we will also be able to accomplish a lot of really cool ideas that we have in the works.

I use DSV: Can I still keep using my installed DSV software?

Yes. We will continue to honor existing support contracts for DSV 7 and DSV 8. If you have not renewed your support contract, you can continue to use the software you purchased for as long as you want without support.

As a special bonus, any DSV team that purchases a Hudl subscription for 2011 will receive a free upgrade to DSV 8.

I use DSV: What happens to DSV Anywhere?

DSV Anywhere will no longer be available. Teams who’ve purchased DSV Anywhere this year will have immediate access to Hudl. And don’t worry, your video and data can be automatically transferred to Hudl. Once our development team has completed that transfer, we will be turning off access to DSV Anywhere.

I use DSV: What about Player Direct?

If you have purchased a Player Direct account for this season, you will be able to access the tools through July 31, 2012. With your subscription, you will also have access to Hudl’s recruiting tools when they launch this fall.

I use DSV: What if I haven’t renewed any of my contracts with DSV for this year?

You’re totally free to do as you please. You can continue using a past version of DSV but if you need online access or support, you’ll need to sign up for Hudl or shop for an alternative product. If you do choose to use Hudl, you can easily import your video and data from DSV to Hudl’s online tools.
