Our Favorite iPhone Apps

There’s a little bit of geek in everyone at the Hudl office, and we’re all addicted to apps. With the release of the Hudl iPhone app, we figured it’d be fun to share some other great iPhone apps that we’ve come to love. Here are some Hudlie favorites:

Fantasy Football: Our Secret Strategies

The NFL season is well under way! If you’re like us, fantasy football is the perfect way to inspire a little competition away from the field. We have a couple leagues here at the office where respect is won and lost. I’ve done a little scouting and thought I’d share some of the draft strategies I’ve uncovered. Maybe one will help your team next year.

Who Let These Guys Out in Public?

Once in awhile it’s nice to get out of the day-to-day grind and gain some additional motivation from people who are doing awesome things. That opportunity came last week when several of us from the Hudl office traveled an hour east to sit through two days of great speakers at Big Omaha. We promised we wouldn’t make too big of a scene while we were there.

Big Omaha is an annual conference where innovators from across the United States as well as other countries gather to share ideas and gain inspiration. This is the third year of the conference, and it only seems to be getting more popular.

Our Favorite iPad Apps

As you probably saw, we released the Hudl iPad app last week. With all the great feedback we’ve gotten, we decided to give some feedback of our own. We polled the office to see what apps Hudl team members are using on a daily basis. Take a look and let us know what you can add to the list:

What We’re Reading

We’re all bookworms in this office. We admit it. When we’re not working, we’re generally plowing through a slew of books or digging into our favorite sports blogs online. We bore through them like jackhammers and then recommend them to other team members to read.

As we head into the downtime for the Thanksgiving holiday, some of the Hudl team members are sharing their favorite books and blogs. Whether you’re trying to pump up your brainpower or are just looking for good entertainment, we’ve a got a solid list of recommendations for coaches, players, and fellow geeks alike:

The Meaning Behind Tonight’s Nebraska Shrine Bowl Game

With Hudl returning as a sponsor of the 2010 Nebraska Shrine Bowl, this week I had the honor of flying with the South Nebraska Shrine Bowl team to St. Louis to tour one of 22 Shriners hospitals. Side-by-side with the best of the best high school football players in the state, we were in for something more than just your average tour.

The bus ride from the airport to the hospital consisted of small talk between media and players. “Where are you headed on to play in college?”, “What position do you play?”, “How’s the week been living in the dorms?” These questions were trivial compared to what we were about to learn.

Hutchinson Tops National Football Rankings & Helps Us Win

Hutchinson, KS #1 National Ranked Football Team

Our company motto is, essentially, “Helping teams win.”

After claiming their sixth consecutive state title, the Hutchinson (Kan.) Salthawks are No. 1 in the nation according to sports ratings specialist Ken Massey. When Hutch wins, we win.

In an interview with the now legendary Kansas coach, Randy Dreiling shares how he shaped a team that once lost 26 games in a row into a national powerhouse.

As a former Salthawk, I’m proud to have been coached by this man. And as representative of Hudl, I’m proud of the way Hutchinson’s coaching staff (and all our pilot school coaches, for that matter) have helped shape our product.

No-Shave November

Agile Sports Post-Shave Fun

This year, a number of members of our team decided to participate in “No-Shave November”, an event that apparently is growing in popularity nationwide.

Some of our guys decided to get a head start on the month-long event. Kyle Murphy (our lead designer) started growing his beard in early October – sadly, by the second week of November, Kyle gave in to pressure on the home front (no disrespect, Courtney… the beard was getting pretty long) and shaved the six-week growth off his face. Many of the rest of us trudged onward, though, causing people who would encounter us on the street to wonder what was going on at Agile Sports.

Expression Engine Rocks Our Faces

I spent quite some time researching better ways to organizing our growing library of content for Hudl. We’ve got quotes, partner success stories, feature lists, press releases, and on and on. Expression Engine lets us manage all of this stuff without breaking a sweat.

If you have even a passing interest in “web stuff,” it’s worth learning more about.
